Overview

The Health Information Management Supervisor is responsible for technical and administrative, for daily operation of the HIM Coding department which consists of all functions of inpatient and outpatient coding activities related to the management and training of Inpatient and Outpatient coding, health record documentation analysis, cdi, scanning, and inpatient appeal management programs.

Responsibilities

- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees. Interacts professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors and other employees. Behaves in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive public perception of BronxCare Health System and its employee.


-Contributes to and participates in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department. Contribution and participation includes data collection, analysis, implementation of and compliance with risk management and claims activities, support of and participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, consistent adherence to the specific rules and regulations of the BronxCare Health System (a) Safety and Security Policies, (b) Risk Management: Incident and Occurrence Reporting, (c) Infection Control Policies and Procedures and (d) Patient and Customer Service.

 

 

 

-Creates work assignments. Reviews tasks and instructs personnel. Sets performance standards and evaluates performance. Orients, trains and counsel’s employees on all department and hospital policies.

 

 

 

-Updates policies as needed for department and Cancer Registry and all Performance Improvement activities and functions.

 

 

-Responsible for collecting and processing data for various reports, surveys, and research projects, for preparing reports and recommendations for review and consideration by Senior Director and upper management concerning the immediate needs as well as the long rang goals of the department; for recommending equipment and staffing needs, and for preparing and keeping current and operation manuals.

 

 

-Monitors Cancer registry program and gives coding and management support as needed. Maximize opportunity to improve Cancer Registry Program.

 

 

-Provides effective audits and monitors outpatients coding unit for all areas of responsibility. Reviews work accomplished and assesses quality, accuracy and timeliness of work produced by each employee. Ascertains problems encountered and takes corrective action.

 

 

-Monitors and tracks denials and trends activities in order to identify opportunities for decrease denials and improvement. Assists and monitors coding managers as it pertains to the Inpatient Appeal Case Management application and workflow

 

 


-Communicates with HIM Senior Director and/or Coding Managers to support revenue cycle activities and key performance indicators Provides effective monitoring Inpatient coding unit assuring that accurate and timely data is processed by all employees

 

 

-Assists and coordinates work between HIM department and CDI department.

 

 

-Prepares training materials and participates in orientation and instructional activities as required. Advises management and hospital staff members on policies, procedures, and adequacy of record content, and on training and teaching of personnel in health record functions.

 

 

-Interacts with patients, members of the medical and supervisory staff. Represents the department at meetings within and outside Hospital Center. Promotes positive public relations for department and Hospital Center. Shares information at Department Management and coding staff meeting and hospital team meetings as needed.

 

 

-Provides weekly in-services to outpatient coding staff.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree, Master's preferred

CCS or other coding certification required

RHIA or RHIT preferred

Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a supervisory/managerial position in a Health Information Management department

Extensive knowledge of HIM records storage and retrieval systems, rules and regulations relative to release of medical information privacy and security

Thorough knowledge of HIPAA Privacy Rule and JCAHO standards as they apply to Health Information Management
