Overview

Performs a variety of sterile functions such as cleaning, decontamination, inspection/assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution of instruments and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Responsibilities

- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees. Interacts professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors and other employees. Behaves in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive public perception of BronxCare Health System and its employees.

 


- Contributes to and participates in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department. Contribution and participation includes data collection, analysis, implementation of and compliance with risk management and claims activities, support of and participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, consistent adherence to the specific rules and regulations of BronxCare Health System (a) Safety and Security Policies, (b) Risk Management: Incident and Occurrence Reporting, (c) Infection Control Policies and Procedures and (d) Patient and Customer Service.

 



- Demonstrate ability in cleaning, disinfecting, and processing of all instruments utilized in the department.
Cleans and decontaminates reusable instruments and equipment according to Manufacturers Instruction for use.

 


- Thorough knowledge of the receiving and cleaning of instruments. Packs, loads and operates autoclave and other sterilizing equipment.
Inspect sterile instrument packages to verify the integrity of the packaging.

 

 

- Follow department protocols and process for segregation, cleaning and sterilization of reusable items, and for the appropriate disposal of single-use items.

 


- Performs equipment function tests and quality control monitoring tests such as biological Steris test as well as disinfecting and cleaning the sterilizers.

 


- Experience using various sterilizers and sterilization methods including, steam autoclaves.

 

 

- Ensure that sterilized and disposable patient-care items are properly stored in designated storage areas.

 


- Maintain logs of sterility check and autoclave effectiveness as per industry standards.

 


- Knowledge of proper disposal procedures for sharps, or any contaminated material that may remain on trays into the waste system (If present on trays).

 


- Periodically empties equipment, such as constant temperature baths, etc., cleans and refills.

 


- Follows department guidelines for packaging instruments ensuring maintenance of integrity.
Routinely organize sterilized items for easy access, so less handling is required.

 

 

- Demonstrate ability to safely transport as per established protocol of clean and contaminated instruments, ensuring prevention of breech of sterility or contamination to and from the point of use.

 


- Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when working with patients, families, visitors and/or hospital employees.

Qualifications

- Experience in Dental Sterile Processing in a health care/hospital setting preferred. Must be familiar with equipment, instruments, procedures and techniques in Dental Sterile.

 

 

- High School or GED

 

 

- Basic Knowledge of Computers
