Overview

The BronxCare PPA (Perioperative Patient Assistant) at Operating Room functions as a
member of the procedural care team, while under the direct supervision and direction of the
procedural registered nurses and surgical technologists. In this role, the Patient Care Assistant
will provide and maintain a safe, neat, and clean patient environment.

Responsibilities

-Assist in set-up and retrieval of supplies – serve as a runner for supplies located outside of the procedure room.
-Assist staff in restocking supply carts and procedure rooms.
-Assist in set-up and retrieval of equipment – serve as a runner for equipment located outside of the operating room.

-Clean medical equipment, OR beds in procedure rooms,patient positioning and transferring devices,stretchers/wheelchairs, and hard surfaces including, but notlimited to counters, tray tables, and flooring.
-Check for the integrity of sterile instruments and trays.
-Transport sterile instruments and trays to and from sterile processing if needed.

-Check supplies for compromised packaging and expired product.
-Return unused supplies to the core post procedure.
-Clean equipment after every procedure.
-Order linen and restock the blanket warmers.
-Immediately available in the core to transport medical equipment, labs, blood products, and supplies to and from various locations within the Perioperative and Procedural.

Room Turnover and Set Up:

-Respond to pages to assist with procedure room turnover,which includes, but is not limited to cleaning equipment, tables,carts, patient monitoring equipment, hard surfaces, patient transfer or positioning items, removing and replacing usedsuction canisters, and removing all trash, soiled linen, and full sharps containers.
-Call anesthesia tech for anesthesia turnover as directed.
-Assist with setting up the procedure room for the next procedure, which includes, but is not limited to setting upequipment, gathering supplies, placing clean linen on beds.

Patient Care Support:

-Assist the staff in transferring, positioning, and prepping patients as directed.
-Transport patients via wheelchair or stretcher as needed.
-Assist in transferring and positioning patients to and from a stretcher or wheelchair to bed.
-Place patient stretcher or wheelchair in the designated storage alcove.
-Utilize BLS skills by participating in Code Blue events.

Desk Duties:
-Answer the phone, make phone call as directed by the charge nurse.
-Assist the Charge RN with the clerical duties as assigned.
-Run front deck errands.

Miscellaneous:
-Respond to pages to send specimens to the respective department (pathology, lab, etc.)
-Transport blood products as needed.
-Contain all soiled linen and trash in the respective area.
-Manage the cleanliness of the work area by ensuring the core is free and clear of clutter and trash.

 

Qualifications

-High school diploma or equivalent required.

-BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification

-One-year job experience in a hospital or clinic.
-Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
-Experience as a nurse’s assistant preferred.
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
