Overview

BronxCare Health System is seeking an experienced and compassionate Low Vision Optometrist to provide comprehensive optometric and low vision rehabilitation services to patients who are legally blind or visually impaired. The successful candidate will play a critical role in enhancing patients' functional vision, independence, and quality of life through specialized assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and education. This position also includes teaching and mentoring responsibilities for Optometry and Ophthalmology Residents.

Responsibilities

 

Clinical Care

· Diagnose, manage, and treat conditions and diseases affecting the human eye and visual system.

· Perform comprehensive eye examinations and specialized low vision evaluations.

· Develop individualized low vision rehabilitation plans for legally blind and visually impaired patients.

· Prescribe and train patients in the use of low vision devices, adaptive equipment, and assistive technologies.

· Evaluate visual function and recommend strategies to maximize remaining vision and promote independence.

· Coordinate care with Ophthalmologists, primary care providers, rehabilitation specialists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals.

· Maintain accurate and timely medical records in accordance with BronxCare Health System policies and regulatory requirements.

· Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans as needed to achieve optimal outcomes.

Education and Training

· Provide optometric and low vision rehabilitation training to Optometry and Ophthalmology Residents.

· Participate in resident education programs, clinical instruction, and case reviews.

· Serve as a clinical resource for healthcare professionals regarding low vision rehabilitation services and best practices.

· Assist in the development and implementation of educational initiatives related to low vision care.

Program Development and Quality Improvement

· Support the advancement and growth of BronxCare's Low Vision Services Program.

· Participate in quality improvement initiatives and performance improvement activities.

· Remain current with developments in low vision rehabilitation, assistive technologies, and evidence-based optometric practices.

· Participate in departmental meetings, conferences, and continuing education activities.

Qualifications

Education

· Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited college of optometry required.

· Certification of completion of residency training in Low Vision Rehabilitation required.

Experience

· Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Low Vision Optometrist or Director of Low Vision Services required.

· Demonstrated experience evaluating and treating legally blind and visually impaired patients.

· Experience in resident education, clinical teaching, or academic settings preferred.

Licensure and Certifications

· Current and unrestricted New York State Optometry License required.

· Must maintain all required certifications and continuing education requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Extensive knowledge of ocular diseases, visual impairments, and low vision rehabilitation techniques.

· Expertise in prescribing low vision aids and assistive technologies.

· Strong teaching, mentoring, and presentation skills.

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

· Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

· Commitment to patient-centered care and improving quality of life for visually impaired individuals.
